Google has always been the go-to option for getting answers to all the queries we have, be it related to our personal life or professional. We cannot think of any other search engine when we need to get the CORRECT and QUICK information.

There’s a reason, it is called one of the best search engines among others – there are over 1 billion people who are using Google as a search engine and its other products and services to get by!

Today we are here to talk about its latest launch – Google Search Generative Experience (SGE)!

In this article, we will understand what it is and whether it will change the way we look at Google. Furthermore, we will also discuss if SGE is really beneficial, let’s get going.

What is Google Search Generative Experience (SGE)?

Google Search Generative Experience (SGE) is an experimental feature that uses generative AI to enhance search results. When you search for a query that SGE can answer, it will show results with an AI-generated summary of the most relevant information, along with links to more detailed sources.

This is an excellent example of how search and interface capabilities can make a huge difference to the user experience! The summary is written in a natural language style that is easy to understand, and it can include images, videos, and other multimedia content.

According to Danny Sullivan, Google’s Public Liaison, SGE is still under development and they are listening and taking the user feedback to improve it further.

However, it does have the potential to make search results more informative and engaging. It can also help users to find the information they need more quickly and easily.

Featured Snippets, People Also Ask, and a list of links are all below the generative AI result of the query. It doesn’t omit the standard and organic search.

Important Note: Not everyone has access to the SGE, it rolled on May 10th for the testers only! And now it is available for us to sign up in the Search Labs. Once you are approved, you will be able to access SGE in the Google app or Chrome desktop.

What are the features of Google Search Generative Experience?

As said above, Google Search Generative Experience (SGE) is an experimental feature that uses generative AI to enhance the search experience for users.

SGE has a number of features that make it different from traditional search results:

  • AI-generated response: SGE can generate summaries of the most relevant information for a given query. These summaries are written in a natural language style that is easy to understand, and they can include images, videos, and other multimedia content.
  • Conversational mode: SGE can answer follow-up questions in a conversational way. This means that you can ask SGE more detailed questions about the topic, and it will provide more information. That you will see at the bottom of the generated result on a search query.
  • Vertical experiences: SGE can provide more relevant product details in commercial searches. For example, if you search for “best laptops,” SGE might show you a list of laptops with the features and specifications you’re looking for, along with ratings, reviews from other users, and product links.

Along with that it also has some limitations too, like:

  • It is still under development, so it is not always accurate or complete. And you will see the text, “Generative AI is experimental. Info quality may vary.” in all the results it generates.
  • It is not available for all queries. It is most likely to be used for queries that are factual or that have a clear answer. We have seen queries it didn’t respond to at all which were related to religious differences, and even sensitive topics.
  • It may not be suitable for all users. Some users may prefer traditional search results that are more concise and objective with the 10 blue links!
  • It sometimes takes the internet eternity to show up results. And honestly, when did you last wait for so long to get an answer? It might have been an eternity too!

You also need to know that Google SGE works on search engines’ various products and software like Google’s Shopping Graph to get accurate and deliberate answers.

Examples of how SGE Response to Various Types of Searches

With Google’s new breakthrough in the AI industry, you can reimagine the way search engines work and can help users. Even though we didn’t have access to the Search Generative Experience as a tester, it didn’t stop us from knowing how it works in accordance with different types of queries.

Below listed are some examples of how Google’s AI search will show results:

1. SGE for General Queries

Upon asking general queries like, “What is Google Bard?” it will showcase a descriptive AI-generated summary of what is Google Bard, how it works, and when it was developed. Following this you will see standard Google search results along with the organic search results, and people also ask.

2. SGE for Local Search

SEJ also experimented with local searches like “top Italian restaurants in Pheonix,” and the results were amazing. Just like the traditional search result, AI-generated result was also similar to The Local Pack Feature. Along with the restaurants, it also described it in a few words.

3. SGE for Commercial Search

SGE can provide more relevant product details in commercial searches. For example, if you search for “best 4k camcorder under 500,” SGE might show you a list along with the features to look for in a camcorder. It will also display pricing, ratings, and description of the product.

4. SGE for News and top Stories

When you search a query about the news or top stories in an industry it will combine the results of the top 5 website links and generate an AI-based summary. Like here, the search query was about the latest AI news, and SGE came up with:

5. SGE for Image and Video Search

You will have to be extra descriptive while searching for something like social media logos, to download the image. Why? The SGE will generate and definition of social media logos and where you can use them, followed by the images, whereas the regular search would show images for the same query!

As for the video searches like, how to repair metal glasses the SGE will generate a summary describing you should seek expert help followed by Youtube results for the same query.

These are a few snapshots of how SGE responds to different types of search queries. Now, as we know that it can have a noticeable effect on a website’s traffic, how will it impact the SEO? Let’s understand that too!

What will be Google SGE’s Potential Impact on Search Engine Optimization (SEO)?

Search Engine Optimization or SEO has always played a major role for websites in ranking on Google’s SERP. Is it going to be the same after SGE? Well, Google SGE’s potential impact on SEO is still being debated. However, you can mitigate the impact of SGE on SEO, marketing, advertising, and ROI with:

1. High-Quality Content will be a Priority

SGE is likely to change the way that SEO is done!

In the past, SEO has focused on optimizing websites for specific keywords. However, SGE is likely to make this approach less effective. Instead, SEO professionals will need to focus on creating high-quality content that is relevant to the user’s search query.

Along with that, they will also need to create content that is easy to understand and that can be answered in a conversational way.

2. Take Care of User Experience and Personalization

SGE is likely to lead to a more personalized search experience.

SGE is likely to tailor search results to the individual user’s interests and preferences. This will make it more difficult for websites to rank well in search results, as they will need to be relevant to a wider range of users.

Also, you must have a website with a good user experience, which means it should be easy to navigate and use, and provide relevant information.

3. Less Organic Traffic

SGE is bent towards a more conversational search experience.

Before search has always been a one-way process. The user would type in a query, and Google would return a list of links with relevant results. However, SGE is likely to make it possible for users to interact with search results in a more conversational way.

This could lead to more natural and engaging search experiences. You can always opt for paid marketing to get the results!

Overall, the impact of SGE on SEO is still uncertain. However, there’s one thing we are sure about – SGE is likely to change the way that SEO is done.

SEO professionals will need to adapt to these changes in order to remain successful.

Is Search Generative Experience Going to be a Good Change?

Google’s Search Generative Experience (SGE) is overall a powerful tool that has the potential to revolutionize the way we search for information. We saw in the article how using generative AI, SGE can generate summaries of factual topics, definitions of words and phrases, instructions on how to do things, help in shopping for things, and much more.

This information can be presented in a natural language style that is easy to understand, and it can include images, videos, and other multimedia content. However, the SGE is still a new concept and not everyone has access to it. If you want to try it, you can always sign up at the Search Labs and experiment with the SGE.
